Avoid prerinsing your dishes

Many people think that they should rinse dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. However, assuming your dishwasher works properly, you should avoid doing this, because it is not necessary and it won’t get your dishes any cleaner.

Avoid rinsing your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher.

By not rinsing your plates before you put them in the dishwasher, you will save an average of 15 gallons of water per load. You will also save the energy needed to pump the water to your home, plus you’ll save energy if you’re using warm water to pre-rinse. Aside from conserving water and energy, not pre-rinsing dishes will save you time, effort and money, and possibly prevent damage to your glassware.

Instead of pre-rinsing, all you need to do before putting your dishes in the washer is to give them a thorough scraping off, removing any bones or food chunks. Another way to save water is to make sure you only do the dishes when there’s a full load.
