Avoid water leaks

Water is an increasingly scarce resource, and many people have water leaks without even realizing it, so you should be sure to try to detect and repair water leaks. Water leaks can occur inside or outside your home, and can waste a huge amount of water over time, which is bad for the environment and bad for your pocket book.

Leaks, even seemingly small ones like a dripping faucet can result in a huge amount of wasted water and should be fixed as soon as they are detected.

To check for a water leak, follow these instructions. Purchase a meter key to open your water meter box if you don’t already have one. The meter is in the center of the water meter box. To detect a leak, turn off all water devices including automatic ones such as ice makers. If the red dial on the water meter is moving clockwise, then there is a good chance you have a leak.

Check to make sure that none of your faucets are dripping. If they are, they need to be repaired, because a dripping faucet can add up to a lot of wasted water over time. You should also look for leaks around the base of the tap. If you find a leak, call a plumber, or fix it yourself by replacing the washer or other parts.

If it’s not the faucets, it could be your toilets. Here is an easy way to test for a leaky toilet. Put food coloring or instant coffee into the tank (making sure the bowl and tank contain only clear water to start with) and wait for 30 minutes without flushing. If you see coloring in the bowl then you have a leak. A leaky toilet can waste a huge amount of water and cost you hundreds of dollars a year, so you should get it fixed as soon as possible.

If your faucets or toilets aren’t leaking, but your water meter indicates a leak, then you should look around the shower, or bath tub to see if you can detect any leaks. Also have a look around outdoor taps. If you still can’t detect any leaks, then you should definitely call a plumber.

Leaks are a huge waste of water and can often be easy to repair. The sooner you get them fixed, the more water and money you will save over time.
